Pesticide Scam : Punjab farmers demanding agriculture minister's resignation

by Mahak RatheeOctober 4, 2015

The Pesticide Scam has been estimated by  the Congress to be around Rs 1,700 crore and has demanded a CBI probe into the alleged purchase of spurious pesticides to deal with whitefly pest attack on the cotton crop in the state. Farmers are demanding Punjab Agriculture minister Tota Singh’s resignation as  they have suffered losses running into hundreds of crores after whitefly destroyed their crops. “The pesticide scam is worth Rs 1,700 crore. The state government had received Rs 3,523 crore from the Union government between 2008 to 2015 out of which Rs 1,700 crore were misutilised for purchasing spurious pesticides on inflated rates,” Punjab Leader of Opposition, Sunil Jakhar said.
