Kochi: “In addition to providing GI tag, the Government must also provide initiatives to channelize the marketing of the products”, said Mr. K.A. Thomas, an award winning farmer of the Pokkali variety of rice, on Friday. He was speaking on the first day of the interactive session forming part of a two-day National Workshop on “Geographical Indications (GI) of Kerala: the Example of Pokkali Rice” organized by the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights(CIPR), NUALS, Kochi under the leadership of its Director(i/c) Dr. Athira P.S.
On the second day, Dr. C.R. Elsy, the co-ordinator of the Intellectual Property Cell of the Kerala Agricultural University, Mannuthy who has been instrumental in assisting various communities in Kerala obtain GI tags for their products including Pokkali rice conducted a seminar regarding the general origin and concept of geographical indications. The CIPR blog titled “IP Site” was launched by Dr. C.R. Elsy and Mr. M.G.Mahadev, Registrar of NUALS during the workshop.
