CBI court grants bail to ‘encounter specialist’ Tarun Barot in Sadiq Jamal fake encounter
Special CBI court on Saturday granted bail to retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Tarun Barot in 2003 fake encounter case of Bhavnagar youth Sadiq Jamal Mehtar.
With relief to Barot all the eight accused are out on bail. Barot is also an accused in Ishrat Jahan encounter in which was released on default bail last year.
Special judge MM Gandhi pronounced the order while granting relief to Barot on the condition of depositing Rs 1 lakh as personal bond and two surety of Rs 5 lakh each. Barot has also been barred from entering Bhavnagar and Mumbai.
Barot was arrested by CBI in September 2012. He was posted as DySP in Mehsana district of north Gujarat. In December 2012 CBI filed a chargesheet against eight policemen including Barot for killing Sadiq in a fake encounter case. CBI has alleged that Barot had gone to Mumbai and got the custody of Sadiq who was kept in illegal custody of Mumbai police.
Out of eight accused policemen seven were already out on bail. The Gujarat High Court had recently granted bail to two cops who are accused of firing at Sadiq from their service revolver.
This is the first case in which the CBI has attributed the role of IB officials in the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Mumbai.
The CBI while filing the chargesheet in December 2012 had kept the case open for further investigation in connection with roles of senior police officers of Gujarat, Mumbai police and IB officials.
